Soldier accused of killing pregnant mistress

Authorities in North Carolina arrested a Fort Bragg soldier after he allegedly killed a woman carrying his unborn child while she was driving on a highway in Georgia on Tuesday.

In a news conference on Friday, law enforcement officials said the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Alonzo Dargan Jr., trailed Akeila Ware in a different vehicle and fired multiple shots at her door, New York Post reported. Ware’s car subsequently spiraled out of control before crashing. The deceased mother of five was 33 weeks pregnant. Her unborn child did not also survive the shooting.

Sheriff James Woodruff said responders who went to the scene of the crash initially thought it was a normal car accident. “I went to the scene and could not believe that somebody had shot and killed a young mother of five children,” Woodruff said. “On top of that, killed her and she had a baby inside of her that resulted in the death of the baby.”

Officials also said the married soldier and Ware come from the same city in Georgia and they both attended school together. The two were romantically involved. And following the fatal shooting, Dargan went back to Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He was, however, arrested on Thursday after a car suspected to have been used during the shooting was linked to him.

Authorities are yet to determine if the handgun Dargan used in the fatal shooting was issued by the military. The suspect has since been charged with murder and feticide for the unborn baby’s death. He also faces a gun possession charge, and he’ll be extradited to Georgia to face trial, New York Post reported.
