Getting an educational degree is of utmost importance in our society and the world we live.
Realising this, the celebrities set out to acquire degrees but fell by the wayside for different reasons.
Below are 10 popular Nigerians who left school but proceeded to attain stardom:
· Genevieve Nnaji
The actress, after her primary education, attended the Methodist Girls College Yaba, Lagos.
She eventually gained admission into the University of Lagos but dropped out after getting her first role in the movie, “Most Wanted”.
Nnaji, who was referred to as the ‘Julia Roberts’ of Africa by Oprah Winfrey, has since built an enviable portfolio in Africa’s entertainment industry.
· 2Baba
Innocent Ujah Idibia, the “African Queen” classical hit singer after completing his secondary education at Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School in Makurdi, Benue State, enrolled at Institute of Management & Technology, Enugu (IMT).
He obtained his preliminary National Diploma course in Business Administration and Management, he dropped out to pursue his music career.
He was once said in an interview on Channels TV: “I got robbed sometime in school. All my audio cassettes that I recorded they took them. I was sad for like a year plus. I dropped out and I am like look I am not continuing this thing I am going to follow music. I actually confessed to my parents. I told them the truth that I am not going back to school.”
· Ramsey Nouah
The veteran actor grew up in Surulere, Lagos where he attended Atara Primary School and Community Grammar School.
He once revealed in an interview that he didn’t get a university degree.
Ramsey, whose entire career enjoys as massive success, however obtained a diploma at the University of Lagos but decided to discontinue after that and squarely pursue his acting career.
He has managed to carve a niche for himself as one of the few most successful movie stars void of controversies.
· Mercy Johnson
The versatile Mercy Johnson, who is one of the highest paid actresses in Nollywood, actually never made it past the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
She once revealed she got into the movie industry because she failed the university entrance exams (JAMB) several times but has managed to prove herself worthy of her craft as she is one of the remarkable talents in the Nollywood scenes to reckon with.
· D’banj
Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, the Kokomaster, reportedly withdrew when he was in 300 level while studying Mechanical Engineering at University of Lagos due to constant strikes.
In 2001, he made his way to London where he met with Don Jazzy who was trying for a breakthrough as a songwriter and producer. The pair finally returned to Lagos in 2005 when they sensed the music scene in Nigeria was “blossoming” and the rest is history.
· Don Jazzy
The Mavin Records boss, Michael Collins Ajere, dropped out of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma in his first year while studying Business Management.
The prolific record producer, audio engineer and philanthropist upon his return from UK with the Kokomaster, has since carved a place for himself as one of the most successful in the entertainment industry.
· Wizkid
Global act, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, began singing in the church choir at 11.
He later attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School, Ogun State and continued to tow the musical path in secondary school.
Afterwards, BigWiz enrolled at Lagos State University but transferred to Lead City University in the second year.
The “Ojuelegba” singer eventually dropped out at 200 level because of his music career.
Wizkidayo’s musical career has since experienced an explosive growth as he has become one of the most south after around the world.
· 9ice
Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande, the indigenious singer known for his powerful proverbial lyrics and unique style of delivery completed his primary school education at Abule Okuta Primary School in Bariga, Lagos State, and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.
After which he went on to CMS Grammar School in Bariga, where he obtained his West African School Certificate. On finishing secondary school, 9ice enrolled in Lagos State University (LASU) to pursue a degree in law.
Later, he dropped out of his law course at Lagos State University to focus on his music career.
· Olamide
Olamide started his career with the release of his debut single, “Eni Duro,” in 2010. In the same year, he performed at The Hip Hop World Awards.
He studied Mass Communication at Tai Solarin University but dropped out due to financial problems.
Olamide has not stopped putting out hits back to back in the past decade.
· Lil Kesh
Keshinro Ololade is a singer, rapper, and songwriter who rose to fame after releasing the hit single “Shoki”
The Bariga- born was a linguistic student at the University of Ibadan before dropping out to concentrate on music.
He began his musical career in 2012 when he started rapping among his colleagues in Bariga. Shortly after, he released his debut single lyrically“, which became popular in almost all universities.
The talented rapper left YBNL in 2016 to create his own record label “YAGI.”
