STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The African Community Alliance of Staten Island held its second annual African Heritage Festival on Saturday in the Park Hill section of Clifton.
The festival kicked off at 10 a.m., with an assembly of African flags at the post office near Tompkins and Vanderbilt avenues; the gathering then proceeded toward Park Hill Avenue.
Those in attendance were able to gain insight into the 54 countries of Africa and their cultures.
Jennifer Gray Brumskine, the group’s vice president, stated that the event was designed to display the different types of food, culture, customs and way of life of the countries and to intertwine the African culture with the Staten Island culture.
The festival continued with speakers and ended with entertainment.
Brumskine said the alliance was formed 15 years ago on the borough and has since built a stronger connection to the African culture.
“We came, we saw, we conquered,” Brumskine said, explaining how far the alliance has come in representing the African heritage.
An NYPD presence at the event is a way for police and the community to build their relationship, Brumskine said.
The festivities will continue on Sunday with the All-African Countries Soccer Tournament at Corporal Thompson Park in West Brighton.
