GRAND RAPIDS — With promises of food, fashion, music, dance and art, the annual A Glimpse of Africa Festival gave visitors an opportunity to celebrate and explore culture Saturday, Aug. 14. 2021.
Hundreds gathered at Calder Plaza for the third annual event. A flag ceremony in which every African country in Africa was represented across the main stage was among the highlights.

A fashion show featured African clothing and trends, and local musicians performed. Participants also had to opportunity to purchase authentic African items and try hair-braiding and henna tattoos.
Blessing Bamiro, chair of A Glimpse of Africa was excited to be back again. The festival was held in 2020, but at a reduced capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We were really eager to just engage with the community, and just bring back another show… and just continue to showcase the culture, embrace the people, and just spread the love,” Bamiro said.
“We’re just excited to grow as a organization to get bigger, create more structure and be able to bring more events to the community.”
