Los Angeles — About 40 years ago, Romancing SaGa introduced the crackling and chemistry of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner to the audience.
Douglas and Turner, now 76 and 66, are back on screen together during the third and final season of Netflix’s Kominsky Method. It’s been years since the third and last films came together, but their reunion was seamless.
“It’s like riding a bike,” Douglas said in a video call earlier this week. “Looking at each other, many memories will come back.”
Set in Los Angeles, The Kominsky Method does not place the pair in the same exotic location as the 1984 Romancing Stone and its sequel, The Jewel of the Nile. But it also includes the types of caustic spines from their last movie, “Wars of the Roses” in 1989.
With that in mind, Douglas decided to invite Turner to the second season’s “The Kominsky Method” to play his character’s sharp-tongue ex-wife, who was featured on the phone. The idea immediately came to Douglas when creator / writer Chuck Lorre mentioned introducing his ex-wife to the show.
“I just smiled and said,’This is the’War of the Roses’ revisited 30 years later,” Douglas said. “We already have a backstory and everything is ready.”
As in the movies, Turner often uses R-rated terms when talking to Douglas characters, but this doesn’t fail to please her in real life.

Sarah Baker, who plays Douglas’ daughter at the show, was “thrilling” to see the two act together again.
“I like to think of myself as a baby in’Romancing SaGa’,” she joked. “Chemistry is exactly there, its timing, the relationship between them. That’s why it’s so hard to forge, so when it’s essentially between you, we just sit down. Look, I had a front row seat, which was great. “
Paul Reiser, who plays Baker’s fiancée, said he was impressed with the uniqueness of the relationship between Douglas and Turner.
“There aren’t that many pairs of actors … not so many that you’ve seen repeatedly,” he said. “You have Deniro and Pesi. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon …. You have this history the moment you unknowingly see them. It frames in almost a good way. Break. It makes what you see look like part of what you’ve seen for years. Turner’s presence helps to expand the role of Riser and, along with small parts of Oscar winners Morgan Freeman and Allison Janney, make up for Alan Arkin’s absence in the third season. His joke with Douglas. And Needling were perfect and both men won Emmy nominations.
“He was a very important part of our success,” Douglas said. “It was a bit risky … but I felt strong enough for other characters.”
Douglas said the show was sad to end, but thankful for what it taught him.

His reunion with Turner gave both of them the opportunity to look back on their early careers.
Turner remembered his first encounter with Douglas over Mexican food before filming “Romancing SaGa.”

From the muddy roads of the mountainous regions of Mexico to the desolate desert heat of Africa, shooting the first two films was a real adventure. Even though 90% of the movies are done at home, there was also a challenge in the “Wars of the Roses”.
Turner said she and Douglas recently laughed at the last famous scene in the movie. There, their fighting characters are erratically stuck in a giant chandelier. The actor had to sit in the chandelier for hours over a two-week period to get all the shots.
“It was very painful,” Turner said. “Continuity loved it because all you had to do was lie down on the bruise line, do you know? Just line up your arms, bruises, I was in the right place … it was a real test of many things. “
Turner also continues to challenge new experiences with the development of “Finding My Voice,” a women’s cabaret show that has been acclaimed and sold out many times in New York, London and other cities from 2017 to 2020.
“I’m singing now, baby!” Turner said in his trademark smoky voice. “That’s another thing I haven’t done yet, so why?”
Turner is currently filming an independent musical romance called “The Swearing Jar” in Canada.
As for the “Kominsky Method” time, Turner said it was easy.
“All I had to do was really fit the whole thing,” she said. “It was already working … and Michael is my friend. You know, we just said,” Oh, that’s you. “
