RICHMOND (WINA) – The state health department reports a case of the South Africa COVID variant B.1.351 has been identified in the central Virginia health region. Not to be confused with the Central Virginia Health District, this health region runs roughly along the I-95 corridor of the state from counties above the North Carolina line into the Richmond area and its suburbs. The health department says the individual has no history of travel within the exposure period.
This variant is more contagious than the original strain, but there’s no evidence people have become sicker.
This is the 11th South Africa variant case identified in Virginia — including a case in our northwest region identified last week… to go along with 31 cases of the B.1.1.7 UK variant.
